Friction stir welding is a solid state joining process. High strength aluminium alloys are widely used inaircraft and marine industries. Generally, the mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminium joints are poor. Asfriction stir welding occurs in solid state, no solidification structures are created thereby eliminating the brittle andeutectic phases common in fusion welding of high strength aluminium alloys. In this review the process parameters & itseffects on mechanical properties & microstructure and macrostructure, specific to aluminium alloys have beendiscussed.
