Mechanical fasteners are becoming key part of every assembly in all manufacturing industry. The fasteners provideease of disassembly & reassembly, ability to join similar or different materials in a wide variety of sizes, shapes & jointdesigns. They are having low manufacturing cost, readily available in variety of mass produced sizes, installation doesn’tadversely affect base materials, no surface preparation or cleaning is required. Effectiveness of mechanical fastenersdepends upon material of fastener, fastener design including load bearing area of head, hole preparation & installationprocedure. Effective use of fasteners achieve uniform load transfer, minimum of stress concentration & uniformity ofinstallation torque or interference fit. These are most widely used because they are easy to install, remove or replace. Moststandard varieties are interchangeable. Selection of specific fastener or fastening method depends primarily on materials tobe joined, function of joint, strength & reliability requirements, weight limitations, dimensions of components, environmentalconditions.
