Image compression is an application of image processing performed on digital images. The main objectiveof image compression is to reduce redundancy of the image data in order to be able to store or transmit data in anefficient form. Image compression is a key technology in transmission and storage of digital images because of vast dataassociated with them. Image compression is nothing but reducing the amount of data required to represent an image. Tocompress an image efficiently we use various techniques to decrease the space and to increase the efficiency of transferof the images over network for better access. Here we use spiht (set partitioning in hierarchical trees) on the basis ofprocessing time, error comparison, mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio and compression ratio. Spiht givesbetter simplicity and better compression compared to the other techniques. We proposed an image compression schemebased on the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (spiht) algorithm using Huffman encoding techniques . we implement itusing metlab and in future work we are comparing it with other methods and comparing the final results in terms of psnrand mse.
