Punjab is an agriculture oriented state. Over the last couple of years we have startedadopting modern practices in agriculture, but still there is a great need to improve theconventional agriculture practice and tools. The major crops grown here are wheat and rice. Thecrop of rice mainly grown during June-July consumes a lot of water, due to which theunderground water table is going down day by day. So there is a great challenge before us tosave the underground water. The present work aims at designing a WSN based soil moisturecontent measuring system. It is also desired to use this information in association with weatherforecast information to design an expert system for regulating the switching ON/OFF of themotor based on the soil moisture content and weather forecast. A βWSN and Weather Forecastbased Irrigation Regulator Systemβ has been developed. The Moisture Sensor Unit (MSU) hasbeen designed to generate a signal whenever the soil goes dry. The Main Control Unit (MCU) ofthe system on receiving the dry signal from the Moisture Sensor Unit enquires about the weatherforecast from the mobile service provider (IDEA) and accordingly makes a decision whether toswitch ON the motor or not. The said system has been deployed over a period of about sixmonths to regulate the irrigation process for two crops β wheat and onion. On the basis of theresults obtained it can be concluded that the system can reliably be used to regulate the irrigationprocess.
