Abstract

The Automated Platform Safety System is designed to improve passenger safety at railway stations by preventing unauthorized access to railway tracks. Accidents frequently occur when passengers cross railway tracks instead of using designated footbridges or subways. To address this issue, the proposed system introduces an automated physical barrier mechanism installed along the railway platform edge. The system consists of an ultrasonic sensor, ESP32 microcontroller, DC motor, buzzer, and LCD display. The ultrasonic sensor continuously monitors the distance of an approaching train and detects its presence within a predefined range. The detected information is transmitted to the ESP32 microcontroller, which processes the sensor input and generates appropriate control signals for operating the motorized safety barrier. When a train is detected at the platform, the barrier operates according to the required boarding period, allowing passengers to board safely. When a train is not present, the barrier remains closed to restrict access to the railway tracks. Additionally, a buzzer provides audible warnings, while the LCD displays system information such as train arrival status. The proposed system aims to reduce railway platform accidents by providing an automated safety mechanism with minimal dependence on manual monitoring. By integrating sensor-based train detection and microcontroller-controlled barrier operation, this system offers a simple, compact, and practical approach to improving railway platform safety.
