Abstract

Retaining wall is an important engineering structure to resist lateral forces for a mass of earth. Design of
retaining wall is complex because it depends on the shape as well as the condition of mass retained. Most of the time its
design is done with more factor safety which makes it uneconomical. In this study a 28-meter-high gravity retaining wall
which was already constructed, was analyzed with Finite element software PLAXIS 3D and GeoStudio. The parameters
compared are vertical settlement, deflection of wall and stability of slope. It was concluded that factor of safety more
than three was adopted which makes it uneconomical.
