—Rubber dam is a relatively new type of hydraulicstructure compared with steel sluice gate, weir, causeways, etc.which is made of high strength fabric adhering with rubberforming a rubber bag. The barrage, made of rubber, will be filledwith air, so that it can be inflated or deflated as per requirement. The concept of rubber dam and its application in India has yet todevelop to gain from its advantages, though the system has beenused in great extent in countries like China, Australia and inScandinavia. It is used in site specific cases where it may prove tobe a very good alternative to costlier permanent structures. Arubber dam has many advantages, such as simple hydraulicstructure, short construction time, perfect seismic performance, and low resistance to water flow in flood season etc. Generaldescription of system, various configuration and types, workingprinciple and comparative analysis has been presented in thispaper. Also, its usefulness from various perspectives is highlightedconsidering the high and low discharge available in the stream, combined with tidal effects of low and high tide due to its closeproximity with Arabian sea. The benefits of establishing a rubberdam could be even greater than a multi-purpose reservoir as itentails much lower cost, and construction viability and flexibilitywith minimum ecological and environmental set-backs. Combinedwith water management of urban area this could be a very effectivetool of river water management, especially for cities near the banksof rivers.
