BOD is a parameter frequently used to evaluatethe water quality on different rivers. The aim of the presentstudy is to investigate applicability of artificial intelligencetechniques such as ANFIS (Adapti ve Neuro-Fuzzy InferenceSystem) in water quality BOD prediction for the case study,Mahi river at Khanpur in Thasara Taluka of Kheda Districtin Gujarat State, India. The proposed technique combines thelearning ability of neural network with the transparentlinguistic representation of fuzzy system. ANFIS models withvarious input structures and membership functions areconstructed, trained and tested to evaluate efficiency of themodels. Statistical indices such as Root Mean Square Error(RMSE), Correlation Coefficient (R), Coefficient ofDetermination (R2) and Discrepancy Ratio (D) are used toevaluate performance of the ANFIS models in forecastingBOD. ANFIS model is used for the estimation of BODconcentration.
